65 Roses…

Last night, daddy woke up several times talking in his sleep, often times saying out loud “65 roses”. 65 roses is the words often pronounced by children because it’s easier to pronounce than cystic fibrosis. Clearly, it has been on mommy and daddy’s minds a lot as it has now entered their dreams.

I’ve been doing well with my vitamins, enzymes and I still look forward to my teaspoon of applesauce before each meal. The vitamins are in liquid (cherry flavor) form and go down easy, but 1 ml is a lot for me at once since I’m little, so they split it up throughout the day. The enzyme is a pill, so Mommy and daddy break open the pill and pour the contents onto my baby spoon full of applesauce. It takes me a few minutes to get the applesauce all down with the enzymes, but I don’t mind it. I then get to the main portion of my meal with a bottle of breastmilk. Since the doctors are concerned about my slow weight gain, they have me taking two bottles of formula throughout the day to get the extra calories. Apparently formula contains more calories than breastmilk.

In addition to the vitamins and enzymes, mommy and daddy give me 1/8 of a teaspoon of salt each day. Those with CF lose salt out of their body anywhere from 2 – 5 times faster than everyone else. Therefore we must have more salt added to our diet to make up for the loss. They mix 1/16 of a teaspoon with my milk or formula twice a day. I haven’t seemed to notice the small amount, as I still drink it down without a problem.

We’ve talked with family and friends and are receiving great support, and my Aunt Joy has signed up for GREAT STRIDES, which is a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fund-raising event. She’ll be doing the walk at Reid Park on Saturday, March 28, 2009 in Tucson, Arizona. She has had to raise her fund-raising goal several times as she has already received great support. She signed up 3 days before the event, which was the same day we confirmed the diagnosis. We love her very much and are very thankful for the support from her, as well as all our family and friends.
